Retrofit Walls
Injection Foam Insulation Salem, Oregon
Existing walls can be insulated without being opened up. Injection foam fills the closed cavity through small access holes that are patched when the work is done.
What Injection Foam Actually Is
Injection foam is a slow-expanding material placed into a closed wall cavity through a series of small access holes, rather than sprayed onto open framing. It is the retrofit answer: it exists for houses that are already built, already finished, and already lived in. In practice the holes are made from the outside through the siding course or from inside through the drywall, the cavity is filled bay by bay, and the holes are patched when the work is done.
Why Older Salem Houses Are Candidates
A great deal of the housing around Salem and Keizer was built before wall insulation was standard, or with a thin batt that has since settled and left the upper part of the cavity empty. Those walls cannot be reached without opening them, and opening them is a renovation rather than an insulation job. Injection foam reaches the cavity without that, which is often the difference between the work happening and being deferred indefinitely.
Where We Will Tell You It Is Not the Answer
A cavity already packed with settled material cannot take injection foam properly, and filling it anyway produces a poor result that is then sealed inside the wall. Some wall assemblies do not lend themselves to it. And if the building's real fault is an unsealed ceiling plane rather than empty walls, the attic is the better spend and we will say so rather than selling the wall job. We look at the construction before committing to an approach.
What the Scope Should Say
Which walls are being treated and which are not. How the access holes are being made and how they will be patched. What happens where a cavity turns out to be obstructed or already full, because that is discovered during the work and the scope should say in advance how it is handled. A written scope that covers those points is what makes the job assessable afterwards.
Questions
Common questions
Can you insulate my walls without tearing out the drywall?
That is exactly what injection foam is for. The material goes into the closed cavity through small access holes, which are patched afterwards, so the wall surface stays intact.
How is injection foam different from spray foam?
Spray foam is applied to open framing during construction or a gut renovation. Injection foam is designed to fill a cavity that is already closed up, which is the situation in almost every existing house.
Will it work on any wall?
No, and we check before saying yes. It depends on the cavity construction, what is already in there, and whether the cavity is genuinely empty or packed with settled material. Some assemblies are not suitable and we will tell you.
What happens to the access holes?
They are patched as part of the work. On siding they are usually made in a way that the siding course covers afterwards; on interior drywall they are patched ready for paint.
