Crawl Space Insulation Salem, Oregon

The crawl space is where Willamette Valley damp gets into a house. Months of wet Oregon winter sit under your floors, cooling the rooms above and pushing moisture up into the framing.

Warmer Floors, Drier House

A foam-sealed crawl space means warmer floors in winter, less work for your heating system, and framing that stays dry instead of wicking ground moisture year after year. Closed cell foam bonds to rim joists, stem walls and subfloor, closing the gaps that batts in a crawl space inevitably leave as they sag.

Serving Salem and Keizer

Our crews actually crawl in there: we assess, prep and spray crawl spaces across Salem and Keizer, and pair the work with attic insulation when you want the whole envelope sealed. Talk to our insulation contractors or call (971) 299-7076 for your free estimate.

Oregon Crawl Spaces Stay Damp

A long wet season and a high water table in parts of the valley mean crawl spaces here spend months damp. The original logic of venting a crawl space was that outside air would carry moisture away, but when that outside air is itself saturated for much of the year it delivers moisture instead of removing it. The cold floor in February and the musty smell that comes up through the house are the same fault showing itself twice.

Floor System or Encapsulation

Insulating the floor system puts foam between the joists and leaves the crawl space vented and outside the envelope. Encapsulating seals the vents, lays a sealed ground barrier and insulates the perimeter walls, bringing the space inside the envelope. Where ductwork runs through the crawl space, encapsulation is usually the stronger argument, because it stops that equipment operating in cold damp air. The house and the moisture picture decide which applies, not a preference.

Moisture Gets Resolved First, Without Exception

Standing water, a failed or missing ground barrier, grading that directs water toward the house, or a plumbing leak all have to be dealt with before insulation goes in. Foam installed over an active moisture problem does not fix it, it makes it harder to see and harder to reach. If we find one we will say plainly that it comes first, even when that is not the answer anyone wants on the day.

What a Crawl Space Scope Should Name

The approach, the product and the thickness in writing. The ground barrier specified, with its seams and edges detailed, if the space is being encapsulated. Rim joists addressed, because they are a significant air path that routinely gets skipped. Ductwork and plumbing accounted for rather than simply foamed around. A single line and a number is not a scope.

Questions

Common questions

Why insulate a crawl space?

Ground moisture cools your floors and works into the framing; sealing the crawl space stops both and lightens the load on your heating and cooling.

What material do you use in crawl spaces?

Closed-cell spray foam, because it insulates and acts as a moisture barrier in one application.

Do you inspect before quoting?

Yes. Every crawl space is assessed in person and the written estimate names the product, thickness and areas covered.
